NOTICE
Each board in this box has been inspected and selected by our specialists. If any doubt exists regarding the quality of our products, complete a claim form and ship it to us before installation. The person in charge of the installation is fully responsible for colour matching of each board and the final appearance of your floor.
All you need to know before you start
- Wood should never be stored outdoors or in a damp area. If it is to be installed in a new home or a renovation, ensure that all doors and windows are already in place, that the walls are puttied, painted and dry. Hardwood flooring should always be the last item installed. The temperature of the room should be approximately 65º for at least five (5) days prior to installation. The relative humidity of the environment should be roughly 40% - 50%. The humidity should be maintained at that level all year round. Leave the hardwood flooring in the boxes until installation.
- Ensure that the subfloor is a minimum of 5/8" thick. Always use black felt paper underlayment (15 lb) as a moisture barrier before nailing your hardwood floor.
- Remove any carpet, underpad and glue from the subfloor. Make sure that subfloor is absolutely sound, level, dry, has no protruding nail heads and is clean of dirt, wax, grease, etc.
- Strip flooring must be installed perpendicular to the joists, to maintain structural integrity. Apply felt paper parallel to joists, flush to the walls. Measure out 3/4" from the wall at both extremities and snap chalk line. This 3/4" space will allow the natural expansion across the width of the board.
First row:
When starting, use the longest strips in the first row to obtain the straightest line possible. Lay the first row with grooved edged flush to the chalk line. The straightness of the starting row will determine the straightness of the remainder of the floor. Drill holes in the tongue at 45-degree angle every 6"- 10", nail through hole with 2" finishing nails at the same 45-degree angle. Use a nail punch to countersink the heads without damaging edges of the strip. Always install flooring from the right to left side of the room.
Second row:
Use the leftover pieces from the first row if it is long enough. Offset each row a minimum of 6" from the previous row. Engage boards tightly together on sides and ends. Insert nails through tongue at 45-degree angle every on 6" to 10". Use two nails on all pieces less than 12" in length.
Remainder:
Continue across room racking out and choosing pieces so that the ends are never in line and the colour
variation is well laid out.
Wall proximity prohibits the use of the nailer. Use nailer as soon as possible. Subsequent rows must be installed
the same way, using the nailer.
Last row:
Reverse procedure of first two rows. Measure and cut last rows, leaving a 3/4" space at wall. Drill holes and face-nail. Countersink all nail heads and fill with matching putty. Always nail moldings into the wall. Nailing into the floor will restrict the expansion of the floor.
